Recent Advances in Software Defined Networking for 5G Networks
The demand for the flexibility of network management has been growing explosively over decades. To meet users’ and enterprises’ needs for network management, the industry has developed and evolved numerous networking protocols. These protocols tend to each solve a specific problem without benefiting the overall performance. Meanwhile, cloud computing brings many challenges to traditional networking.
To reduce costs and improve flexibility of network management, new network management architectures for the fifth generation (5G) wireless networks are anticipated. Software Defined Networking (SDN) has attracted increasing attention in both industry and academia community since it combines the benefits of network management, new network function deployment, and network architecture evolvement, etc. together. A large number of successful SDN applications have been developed, including inter-datacenter traffic engineering with high link utilization, flexible multi-tenant virtualization with low overhead, software-defined radio access with effective load balancing and interference management. In addition, inspired by the attractive features and potential advantages for 5G networks, SDN has been gaining momentum in the mobile network industry and research communities during the past few years. However, the SDN for 5G networks also comes with its own challenges, and there are also technical issues that still need to be addressed for widespread deployment of the technology.
For this Special Section in IEEE Access, we invite academic and industrial researchers to identify and discuss technical challenges and recent developments related to SDN for 5G networks. The contributions may present novel concepts, ideas, models, methodologies, and simulations. We highly recommend the submission of multimedia with each article as it significantly increases the visibility and usage of articles.
