CSDL 2015 - WORKSHOP: CLOUD BASED SERVICES FOR DIGITAL LIBRARIES

Cloud computing has become ubiquitous, but the concept has no strict definition. Ideally, cloud computing is meant to turn computing into a utility like water or power. Elasticity, availability, improved resource utilisation and support for multiple tenants are key features of the concept. There are three main models of service: Infrastructure as a service (Iaas), Platform as a service (Paas) and Software as a service (Saas).
Cloud computing may aid heritage institutions with its oft-cited benefits such as cost effectiveness, quick deployment and access to resources beyond the abilities of individual small institutions. But the devil is in the details, as heritage applications present specific requirements, associated with the practices and needs of specific users. Developers of cloud-based services in the heritage sector should distinguish between the three user groups: content providers & aggregators, the general public, and scholars.
There are a number of Saas providers providing services for the cultural sector. Some of the commercial vendors of collections management systems offer cloud based versions of their software, and in the library domain the OCLC offers a number of relevant services. However, there is probably still a need for on-line tools with a very low barrier to entry which are suited to the needs (and budgets) of smaller local and community museums, as well as of service frameworks that provide value-added services needed in order to address typical uses of heritage information and typical needs of heritage preservation and curation.
Topics
This workshop focuses on cloud-based services for metadata aggregation and enrichment in the cultural heritage domain and the Europeana environment. We invite contributions of demos and short papers from practitioners working in this area on the following and related topics:
Digital library services in the cloud
Content enrichment and quality assurance
Vocabulary and Historic placenames services
Geocoding and geoparsing
Crowd sourcing
Metadata mapping
Metadata aggregation
Call for papers
Authors are invited to submit demos and short papers (2-6 pages). Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished papers relating to the above topics. All papers should be submitted as PDFs and formatted according to Springer’s Lynx format.
Submissions will be reviewed by three members of the Program Committee. All papers accepted at the workshop must be presented (either orally or as a poster) during the workshop by a registered participant.
