Information systems are becoming an ever more integral part of how we live and work. As new information technologies become increasingly embedded in our daily routines, the information being collected and analyzed has begun to have a profound impact on many aspects of market, organizational, and individual behavior. Within organizations, IT-enabled decisions now play a key role not only in Marketing and Finance, but also in Human Resources, Operations Management, and Accounting. Outside of the work context, exponential growth in the use of consumer devices and cheap sensors has changed how we interact with information and with each other, enabling new applications like those related to the sharing economy and mobile health analytics. Several decades into the technological revolution, there are now few aspects of modern life and work that remain untouched by information systems.
The potential for information systems to provide value by enhancing our lives, work, and environments is undeniable. On the other hand, the increasingly central nature of these systems also introduces some important questions about the harmful aspects of these systems, such as those related to privacy, inequality, or unemployment. CIST 2015 will feature research papers and keynote speakers that explore research on the benefits and dangers related to the conference theme of the “Keystone” role being played by many of the Information Systems in business and societal transformation.
