SofGG 2015 - Symposia of Greek Gastronomy 'Over a hot stove: Women in the kitchen'

The symposium will consider issues involving the relationships between Greek women, cooking and power, gender role expectations and issues of race and class from the earliest times to the latest. It will also explore rituals of home cooking related to female, the way society views the task of cooking, the male entrance into the kitchens, the male-dominated professional restaurant kitchens.
We welcome original contributions from scholars and professionals in the fields of humanities and social sciences (such as archaeology, ethnoarchaeology, anthropology, sociology, history, crosscultural studies, education, ethics, women studies, literature, philology and so on), artists, activists, food practitioners.
Possibilities for announcements, posters, visual exhibitions and interactive sessions include (but are not limited to).
Cooking and gender.
Gender expectations in culinary and gastronomic matters.
Equality (?) in the kitchen.
Women’s voices in ancient kitchens.
Domestic cooks, kitchen maids, servants and female slaves.
Women’s home cookery as art and necessity.
Advertising of ‘feminine’ kitchen gadgets.
Women in the professional kitchens.
Gender and class norms in cookbooks.
Cooking literature and appropriate behavior for females.
‘Feminine’ foods.
The role of women in changing foodways.
Cook to catch a man.
Men, women, cooking and stereotypes.
Traditions and rituals in the kitchen.
Women’s role in the battle against shortages and hunger.
Instructions for submitting abstracts for oral / poster presentation or visual exhibition
The title, an abstract of no more than 300 words (in English) together with a no more of 100-word biography of the speaker (in English) should be submitted by May 30, 2015 to mkavroulakis-AT-gmail.com. In the e-mail subject please write “3rd Symposium”.
Oral presentations will be 20 minutes long.
Both graduate and postgraduate students are strongly encouraged to attend the symposium and present their work in the form of a poster. (The title, an abstract of no more than 70 words ? in English- together with a bio of no more than 100 words -in English- should be submitted by May 30, 2015 to mkavroulakis-AT-gmail.com. In the e-mail subject please write “3rd Symposium”.)
The symposium languages are Greek and English.
Information for poster presentation and visual exhibitions
Presenters and artists are responsible for preparing their posters with the title and name(s) of author(s) or artist(s).
Size of the poster: max. H: 1,20 m, max. W: 0,80 m.
The title should be readable at a distance of 2 meters and text should be easily readable from a distance of 1 meter.
Interactive sessions
An abstract of no more than 300 words (in English) to describe the theme, its relevance to the theme of the symposium, the duration (60 minutes max), space requirement and a no more of 100-word biography (in English) should be submitted by May 30, 2015 to mkavroulakis-AT-gmail.com. In the e-mail subject please write “3rd Symposium”.
Publication
By submitting an abstract the author allows its publication in the abstract book/congress proceedings
Papers presented at the symposium will be published online as part of the symposium proceedings. (Symposia of Greek Gastronomy require a non-exclusive copyright license for all the papers presented at the conference and for the presentation material. This includes potential distribution on a conference CD-ROM and/or the SGG website.)
Registration
All persons wishing to present an oral talk or a poster must complete a registration form and return it by May 30 to mkavroulakis-AT-gmail.com.
The symposium is open to the public, but registration for non-presenting attendees is required.
Accommodation
If possible, organizers of the symposium will provide free accommodation in private homes and local hotels for the presenters of the symposium (free accommodation for 1 presenter of a poster or an oral presentation at the time of symposium). Those interested should e-mail mkavroulakis-AT-gmail.com to arrange such shared housing.
Participation fee:
Standard participation fee: 30 euros per person, 50 euros per couple (regardless of relationship).
Special participation fee for PhD students: 20 euros
The participation fee is paid only when the registration is approved.
The participation fee includes:
Certificate for publication and participation
Admission to all sessions of the conference
The presentation of a paper either as a talk or as a poster.
Online publication of a paper up to 15 pages long.
A printed or electronic copy of the conference program.
Refreshments, snacks and two dinners.
Payment
Participation fees are transferred to the account, given in the notification email, sent to the participant by the organising committee.
All bank charges and commissions are paid by the participants. Please inform your bank about this when ordering the transfer.
Payment on site is not allowed.
IMPORTANT
If you are unable to present, you are kindly requested to send an e-mail notification to Mariana Kavroulaki (mkavroulakis-AT-gmail.com) no later than June 30.
Authors who are unable to present, can locate another presenter who will present the exact paper, or can send a PowerPoint version of their presentation.
Authors who do not notify the organisers of their cancellation ahead of the meeting and fail to present their poster, will be banned from submitting an abstract at the 2017 Symposium.
