Overview: The integration of healthcare organizations into systems has been going on for decades especially among hospitals. It began principally with the religious orders organizing their freestanding hospitals into a single organization usually a holding company and has proceeded in the past 2 decades to integration between physician organizations and hospitals and hospital systems. Some of these integration efforts have been sponsored or led by physician organizations such as the Mayo Clinic and others have been organized principally by hospital systems like Ascension. Both large and small organizations have been involved in this process and there have been many different approaches especially those related to merger, acquisition, joint operating agreements and others.
Leaders and managers of both physician and hospital organizations must realize what they are getting into during these discussions and emphasis should be placed on due diligence and the understanding of the cultural differences that may occur between professional and hospital organizations. The pros and cons will be discussed.
