Environment monitoring technology is now an urgent need because the series of environmental problems, e.g., climate changes, urban expansion, pollution, and droughts, have put forward a challenge to the scientific community as well as the development of human civilization. The wireless sensor network (WSN) emerges as an efficient tool for measuring a wide variety of environmental parameters in large scale as well as dynamically and is also a key technology to support sustainable development. Moreover, WSN has brought new scientific problems: how to acquire real-time accurate measurements in minimum cost, how to deal with the large amount of measured data, and how to aggregate the WSN measured data with other data sources such as remote sensing images. To explore the vast potential of WSN technology, lots of work still needs to be done, including standards, protocols, hardware, software, data management, security, and robustness as well as exemplifying applications. This special issue will be focused on the applications of WSN (scalar and/or multimedia) in environment monitoring. Papers detailing WSN design, data analysis, and applications are equally welcome.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
Design of energy efficient and robust WSN (scalar and/or multimedia) hardware, software, and systems
WSN data evaluation, validation, and calibration
Real-world case studies of WSN (scalar and/or multimedia) data in agriculture, climate, ecosystem, hydrology, and remote sensing
Data mining and aggregation of WSN data with other data sources to extract relevant data and increase WSN lifetime: local and remote sensing, collaborative processing, etc.
WSN data, management and big services, and database (big data)
