The Athens Center for Classical & Byzantine Studies (ACCBS) of ATINER organizes a Stream on “Diplomacy in the Classical and Byzantine World” as part of the Annual International Conference on Classical and Byzantine Studies, 4-7 June 2018, Athens, Greece sponsored by the Athens Journal of Philology, the Athens Journal of History, Athens Journal of Humanities & Arts, Athens Journal of Mediterranean Studies and the Athens Journal of Architecture.
The aim of the stream is to discuss the specific topics relating to the development and structure of the Diplomatic relations in the Classical and Byzantine World. Diplomacy is a crucial way of maintaining international political stability and protecting the world order. This is a role diplomacy is playing in the contemporary world, but it is also the role it had been playing in the past. This stream will focus on the role of diplomacy in the interstate relations in antiquity and beyond. We welcome papers of a wide range of issues, like, for instance, the history of diplomacy in Greece and Rome as well as in the Byzantine Empire, with special accent on particular events to be made. Discussions of the diplomatic institutions and traditions are also welcome. We are interested in presentations covering the approaches to War and Peace, Envoys exchange, negotiating and concluding truces and treaties, and, finally, diplomatic etiquette. You may participate as presenter of one paper, chair or/and organizer of a session, or observer.
Fee structure information is available on www.atiner.gr/2018fees.
Conference organizers are responsible for making special arrangements with local hotels for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate; the price of the room is included in the conference fee, while the room reservation is secured upon payment of the fee. The conference also includes a number of special events at an additional cost: A night of Greek food and entertainment, a special one-day cruise to select Greek islands, an archaeological tour of Athens, and a one-day visit to Delphi. More details on the social program are available here.
