Device-to-Device (D2D) communications is gaining increasing popularity, not only among researchers in academia and industries but also among standardization bodies. In fact, D2D communication is viewed as a key technology for providing ubiquitous computing and communication, traffic offload from cellular networks, improved energy efficiency and coverage extension, peer-to-peer communications, etc. The D2D concept is built around the idea of enabling two or more mobile devices in proximity of each other to establish direct local links, either in an autonomous manner to form an ad hoc network or coordinated by a base station in order to perform direct data transfer. As a result, D2D is expected to lead to novel wireless applications such as proximity services and robust public safety communications. However, there are many issues to be addressed before the concept of D2D communication can be implemented and commercialized such as interference management, self-organization, network discovery, and resource allocation, among others.
Topics of interest cover all aspects related to D2D communications with and without infrastructure, including results for both cellular-coordinated approaches and distributed ad hoc networking solutions from academia, industries as well as standardization bodies. In particular, this workshop solicits contributions on, but not limited to, the following topics:
