Description:
Waste that causes potential threats to public health or the environment is called Hazardous Waste. In the United States, the treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous waste is regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
Under RCRA in 40 CFR 261, hazardous waste is categorized into two: characteristic wastes and listed wastes. The general categories of hazardous waste include universal wastes like batteries containing lithium, device containing mercury and fluorescent bulbs. Household Hazardous waste includes solvents and paints, pesticides, Aerosols, cleaning agents and refrigerant-containing appliances.
Disposal of hazardous waste include a lot of challenges as majority of them are non-biodegradable. Many hazardous wastes could be recycled. The commonly used treatment for disposal of hazardous waste is cement-based solidification and stabilization. There is no specific scientific background needed for attending this course, only limited experience with wastes and their properties.
Why Should you Attend:
If you are responsible for the environmental or safety management system, operation of industrial site or management of construction project, you need to be sure that your output wastes are identified, categorized according to their properties and managed in a proper manner.
Also, you need to be sure that you are taking all the necessary considerations to reduce the wastes from the source. And finally, if you have hazardous wastes, you need to be sure that you are identifying these wastes properly and is taking all the necessary measures to treat or store these hazardous wastes properly.
