Networking is one of the key aspects in defining an IaaS System and one of the most complex resources to manage. In a Cloud infrastructure, multiple Virtual Machines share the same network hardware and the same geographic link. Moreover the Cloud paradigm requires the possibility to redefine the network according with the customer needs: security, VLAN,VPN connection, network performances, as well define QoS. Today we have several software components, both open-source and enterprise, that offer several possibilities to virtualize multilayer switch, and routers by using standard protocols.
Moreover Software Defined Networking (SDN) propose an emerging paradigm that provides a decoupling of the control plane, which is the intelligence? of the network, from the forwarding or data plane. It introduce a layer of interoperability that is a starting point for the deployment of future services. Today all the most important network companies support SDN, or have plans to implement it in the short term. In addition several software router or software network appliances support OpenFlow protocol or other technologies that allow to implement SDN in Cloud environment.
The cartesian product of Cloud Network and Software Defined Network opens a formidable range of new opportunities that could change the vision of the future Network
