NextFrontier 2014 - The Next Frontier for Cartography: Mapping the un-Mappable?
Topics/Call fo Papers
Despite the fact that Cartography was born from the long development of human society and culture, the power of maps is higher than ever. Technology is enabling ubiquitous connectivity and instant global information production and mapping. Yet we do not understand how it impacts the foundations of theoretical cartography and the core competency specifications of Cartographers. How current cartographic concepts and methods fit into this new scene? Are Cartographers still needed? What is their role? What should be their qualifications in the 21st century? What are the emerging research topics in Cartography? Does the future of Cartography rely on mapping the un-mappable? Are we witnessing a massive paradigm shifting change in Cartography? The workshop is set up to be a thought provoking and interactive event for revitalizing the discussion about the challenges, issues, trends and opportunities led by the keynote presentations of
Sara Fabrikant, Professor of Geographic Information Visualization & Analysis, Department of Geography, University of Zurich, Switzerland.
Georg Gartner, Professor of Cartography and Geo-Media techniques at the Research Group of Cartography, Vienna University of Technology, Austria.
Markus Jobst, INSPIRE Project Coordination, Deputy Head of Department Information-Management, Austrian Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying, Austria.
Menno-Jan Kraak, Professor of Cartography, Chairman of the Department of Geo-Information Processing, University of Twente, The Netherlands.
Format: Half-day
