Overview: In 2008, Phelps was one of a group of development professionals who conducted a survey of donors from different races, cultures and sexual orientation. The survey was designed to determine what donors from diverse backgrounds needed from the organizations they supported. The survey also asked donors to reveal situations in which they had been offended by the actions of nonprofits.
The survey revealed some clear examples of how nonprofits could improve their policies, hiring practices, and actions in order to be better positioned to receive widespread support. The workshop will review the survey methodology and results. Specific examples will help to illuminate some of the triggers that may upset donors and allow the participants to reflect upon their own actions and how they can improve their performance when working with donors no matter what the donor's background, experience and mindset might be. Analysis of the results will provide a general framework for development professionals and others to use in order to effectively diversify their donor base and to provide an environment of inclusiveness.
Those participating in the workshop can expect to:
Understand why it is important to think strategically from the donor's point of view taking into account cultural differences.
Learn how to avoid unintended cultural mistakes during the engagement process.
Achieve a deeper understanding and appreciation of diversity and inclusion.
Gain knowledge of how to unite organizational mission with donors of different cultures.
The workshop will also reflect upon some of the current work that is being done in the area of diversity and inclusiveness including the 2013 AFP Diversity and Inclusion Summit and the AFP Inclusive Giving Project in Ontario, Canada.
