Scope
Inspired by the paradox of the great potential of components for systems design on the one hand, and the lack of use of components in real projects on the other hand, the S2C Workshop on Software and Simulation Components brings together researchers and users in the software engineering field and the modeling & simulation field to exchange theories, tools, applications, and best practices to finally ensure a proper use of components. The field of component-bases systems engineering is challenged by many interesting research issues. Examples are the proper definition of components, the use of libraries for component-based design and development, the reuse of components, semantic definition of component functionality, theoretical models underlying components, and hierarchical modeling in general. The modeling & simulation field has a long history of applying hierarchical design of complex simulation systems, whereas the software engineering field has developed quite some theory on the use of software libraries and on component-based development. Neither of the two fields has reached the breakthrough that was expected long ago. This workshop will serve as a platform for discussion of the theoretical and practical issues around component-based development. Complex software systems and complex simulation systems will be used as a reference throughout the whole workshop. The workshop will be based on papers, but tool demonstrations and discussion sessions can be added to the program to stimulate the exchange of ideas between participants.
S2C 2010 would therefore welcome those who are inspired about the potential of component theory, component development, use of component libraries, and hierarchical modeling in the software field and the simulation field. Especially papers that show insights from the software field in the simulation field or vice versa are invited.
Areas / Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
1 - Theory formation for hierarchical and component-based modeling
2 - Component-based and hierarchical modeling in the software engineering field
3 - Component-based and hierarchical modeling in the simulation field
4 - Use of libraries of components to enhance (distributed) systems development
5 - Best practices for component development, reuse, and hierarchical systems development
