PLEcp 2014 - First International Workshop on Personal Learning Environments in Creative Practice
Topics/Call fo Papers
In recent years the notion of Personal Learning Environments has gained considerable traction and popularity within the wider educational technology and web-based learning research community. However, so far the majority of research and development efforts have focused on applications within the boundaries of formal, institutional educational settings. Relatively little attention has been paid to the formation and development of personal learning environments in the context of the unfolding digital transformation of professional work in general, and creative practices in particular.
Many contemporary creative practices seemingly depend on a complex interplay of material and digital instrumentation and mediation on one hand, and a range of action strategies (such as tinkering, probing, etc.) on the other hand, that differ significantly from what is usually found and promoted in formal educational settings. To develop the notion of personal learning environments in the context of creative practice, we propose the initiation of a decidedly cross-disciplinary discourse on its emerging phenomenology, the structural requirements of its material and (increasingly) digital mediation, and aspects of appropriation and re-appropriation of digital instruments in its context.
Our proposed workshop is thus trying to bring together scholars from different and relatively separate research strands, namely Personal Learning Environments, Design Research and Design Education, and Technology Enhanced Workplace Learning, to share and discuss a variety of conceptual and empirical perspectives on personal learning and its mediation in creative practice.
Our main goal is to explore the possible formation of objects of research and a minimal descriptive vocabulary that could be shared by scholars from different strands of research. We will thus welcome conceptual, analytical and empirical contributions that promise to support the intended discursive encounter and our proposed agenda.
Topics of interest
