After Ajax technology had released Web applications from using screen transition on communicating with a Web server, Web applications got closer to desktop applications. Now we can utilize WebSockets and WebRTC. Both of them are technologies for bidirectional communication. And we can also benefit from asm.js, which is a technology for making JavaSctipt run faster. Furthermore, WebGL enable us to develop a faster 2d/3d graphics application with the Web. Web applications might be able to be substituted for the desktop applications.
