PO 2014 - The 2014 International Workshop on Port Operations (PO2014)
Topics/Call fo Papers
Ports play essential roles in modern economics, especially in a developing country like China.
Ports in China become more and more important in the map of global business. Shanghai,
Shenzhen, Hong Kong ports are among the busiest ports in the world. China’s recent initiative
on Shanghai Free Trade Zone further highlights the urgency of improving port efficiency both
in strategic and operational sense.
Operations in a single port are already complex as information, resource and decisions are all
high-dimensional in nature. Both short term and long term scheduling and planning problems
are well studied in literatures; for example, berth scheduling, empty containing repositioning
and etc. However, the gap between the academic work and the industry practice is still big. A
number of research questions are remained open: How to manage different type of port
operational resources in an integrated and intelligent way? How to coordinate operations in
different ports? How to motivate different players to provide best services for the final
customers with minimal costs given the fact that they are not always free of interest of
conflict?
We hope this workshop can provide some interesting discussions on the above issues.
