The International Society for Infectious Diseases is delighted to announce that our next meeting will be held in Cape Town, South Africa from the 2nd to the 5th April 2014. The ISID has always had its focus on the global burden of infectious diseases and it is important for us to announce our return to Africa some 20 years after the last meeting of the Society there in Kenya in 1992.
The meeting will encompass all of the fields in infectious diseases with particular attention being paid to the major infectious causes of death in Africa and elsewhere, which include AIDS, malaria, TB, pneumonia and enteric infections including typhoid fever and diarrhea. In all of these fields there are exciting interventions underway in Africa, the results of which will be presented in Cape Town. In addition there are major areas of neglected tropical diseases that will be discussed and a particular focus will be on the largely uncounted burden of nosocomial infections in developing countries.
The meeting will be hosted by the Federation of Infectious Diseases Societies of Southern Africa in the lovely city of Cape Town. The Convention Center is located within walking distance of many hotels and the Cape Waterfront which is the gateway to visiting areas as diverse as Table Mountain, Cape Point where the Atlantic and Indian Ocean’s meet, the notorious prison Robben Island, the Cape Winelands and the interior which includes the famous game parks of Southern Africa.
The ISID is as vibrant as ever with over 50,000 members. Our Society includes ProMED-mail which identifies emerging infections in Africa and worldwide. Please mark these dates on your calendar and start making plans to join us for what we hope will be a landmark 16th ICID meeting.
