The research areas of Semantic Web and Linked Data have received a lot of attention in academia and industry recently. Since its inception in 2001, the Semantic Web has aimed at enriching the existing Web with meta-data and processing methods, so as to provide Web-based systems with intelligent capabilities such as context-awareness and decision support.
Over the years, the Semantic Web vision has been driving many community efforts which have invested a lot of resources in developing vocabularies and ontologies for annotating their resources semantically (e.g., Dublin Core, biomedical ontologies etc.). Recently, the same vision has been prevalent in efforts such as schema.org by the four major search engines Bing, Google, Yahoo! and Yandex. schema.org makes available a collection of schemas that Web masters can use to markup their pages in ways that can aid search by these search engines.
Linked data is a related research area which studies how one can make RDF data available on the Web, and interconnect it with other data with the aim of increasing its value for everybody. The resulting "Web of data" has recently started being populated with many datasets especially given the recent emphasis on open government data and pioneer efforts such as the data.gov.uk.
Many advanced capabilities required by Semantic Web and Linked Data application scenarios call for Reasoning. Thus, a perspective centered on the reasoning techniques complementing other research efforts in this area is desirable. This Summer School series is devoted to this perspective.
The Reasoning Web series of annual Summer Schools was started in 2005 on behalf of the work package "Education and Training (ET)" of the Network of Excellence REWERSE.
The 10th Reasoning Web Summer School will take place in Athens, Greece from September 8-13, 2014. This year, the theme of the School will be:
Reasoning on the Web in the Big Data Era
The invention of new technologies such as sensors, social networks platforms and smart phones has enabled organizations to tap a huge amount of data that traditionally has not been available to them, and to combine it with in-house proprietary data. At the same time, enabling technologies (e.g., elastic cloud computing platforms) have made strong progress enabling the implementation of data management and knowledge discovery techniques that work on Terrabytes or Petabytes of data.
In 2014, the lecture program of the Reasoning Web school will reflect this industrial reality, and will introduce students to recent advances in Big data aspects of Semantic Web and Linked Data, and the fundamentals of reasoning techniques that can be used to tackle Big Data applications.
