LUH 2014 - 5th International Conference on Landscape and Urban Horticulture

5th International Symposium on Landscape and Urban Horticulture which is to be held August 17th-24th, 2014 in Brisbane, Australia as part of the 29th International Horticultural Congress (IHC2014). IHC2014 will include many symposia and workshops that not only relate to the landscape and urban horticulture industry but also to the wider horticultural industry, food production and environmental/amenity horticulture.
The Symposium theme is "Horticulture, Landscape and Green Architecture". It addresses topics that include innovative approaches in landscape and urban horticulture, especially in transitional economies, the management of urban horticulture landscapes and issues of contemporary urbanism. Academics, scholars, scientists, researchers, executives, consultants, government officers, graduate students and industry leaders are invited to participate in the sharing of research-based information within the field of landscape and urban horticulture.
We invite paper and poster presentations which address the risks, challenges, opportunities and solutions on one or more than one of the following thematic areas:
Building: Green architecture/history/design/contemporary urbanism in landscape and urban horticulture
Management: Sustainable management/maintenance/practices in landscape and urban horticulture
Reflection and Education: Research/teaching/extension/consultancy in landscape and urban horticulture.
We also welcome papers that discuss recent advances more generally in any of the following topics:
Historical perspectives and biographies associated with landscape and urban horticulture
Landscape and urban horticulture in the transitional economies
The role of industry in education and training/research and extension in landscape and urban horticulture
Skills acquisition and the career opportunities in landscape and urban horticulture, and
The application and impact of landscape and urban horticulture projects along the shores of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans of the World.
In connection with this symposium will be a workshop on the efficient use of water for urban landscaping
Convenors
Dr Gert Groening is the chairperson of the ISHS Commission Landscape and Urban Horticulture. From 1985 to 2009, when he retired, he served as Professor of Urban Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he continues to be active in research. Together with four professors from comparative literature, musicology, art history, and music- aesthetic pedagogy, he was carrier of the cross-disciplinary post graduate doctoral program 'Practice and theory of creative processes in the arts' at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1998 to 2005. Professor Groening is chairperson of the German Horticulture Library Association, Berlin; Senior Fellow for Garden and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington, D.C.; Councillor for the Center for Garden Art and Landscape Architecture at Leibniz University in Hannover, Germany. He is on the international editorial advisory boards of 'Studies in the History of Gardens & Designed Landscapes' (USA), 'Landscape Research' (UK), and 'Die Gartenkunst' (Germany).
Keynote Speakers
Dr Steffen Lehmann is the Chair Professor of Sustainable Design at the University of South Australia, where he is also Director of the Zero Waste Centre for Sustainable Design and Behaviour and the China-Australia Centre for Sustainable Urban Development. He studied architecture and urbanism at the Architectural Association School in London and holds a PhD from the TU Berlin. He established his own practice, the s_Lab in 1993 in Berlin, where he was instrumental in the urban recreation of the 'new Berlin''. From December 2002 he been based in Australia. Professor Lehmann's group recently were recipients of a CRC for Low Carbon Grant entitled "Urban Micro Climates: Comparative study of major contributors to the Urban Heat effect in three Australian cities (Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide)". The title of his presentation at the Congress is "From Urban Biodiversity to Urban Farming: transforming cities".
Dr James Hitchmough is Professor of Horticultural Ecology, in the Department of Landscape at the University of Sheffield, UK. Professor James Hitchmough’s ground-breaking work at Sheffield explores how ecology can be applied to designed and managed herbaceous vegetation in urban environments in order to maximise sustainability, support native wildlife and create exciting and meaningful experiences for human beings. In conjunction with his colleague Nigel Dunnett, James has designed all of the 8.5ha of sown native vegetation types (meadows, swales and woodland understories) at the 2012 Olympic Park. The title of his keynote presentation at this Congress will be “Combining Horticulture with Ecology and Social Science to create Sustainable Urban Landscapes”.
Geoff Connellan has published and presented widely on urban water management. Following thirty years with The University of Melbourne, in teaching and research, he is now consulting under G&M Connellan Consultants in Melbourne, Victoria. He is author of reference “Water Use Efficiency for Irrigated Turf and Landscape”, published by CSIRO. He is the initiator of SmartGardenWatering.org.au website and has been recognised nationally for his contribution to the Australian irrigation industry. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Department of Resource Management and Geography, University of Melbourne. The title of his keynote presentation at the Congress is “Optimising the urban landscape contribution to liveability through modification of the urban water cycle”.
