Conference Theme
"Maritime Economics in a Post-Expansion Panama Canal Era"
The expansion of the Panama Canal is expected to be completed in 2014, allowing for Post-Panamax containerships up to 12,500 TEUs in size to transit the Panama Canal. In response, U.S. East Coast container ports are having their channels and berths dredged deeper ? to allow Post-Panamax containerships from Asia (transiting the expanded canal) to have the water depths to be able to call at their ports. The Port of Virginia (in Norfolk, Virginia) presently has the deepest channel depth (50 feet) of all U.S. East Coast ports. However by 2014, the Ports of New York/New Jersey and Miami are also expected to have channel depths of 50 feet. The Ports of Charleston and Savannah are planning to deepen their channels to 47 and 48 feet, respectively. Intermodal facilities are also being upgraded.
Will the Post-Panamax containerships from Asia that transit the expanded Panama Canal call U.S. East Coast Ports? Some argue that many may not ? but rather will call at transshipment ports. Recently, the French shipping line, CMA-CGM, announced that it will use the Port of Kingston as a transshipment port to transport cargoes using smaller feeder containerships to and from U.S. and South American East Coast Ports. What are the implications for the U.S. West Coast Ports? Will there be a cargo shift from West Coast to East Coast Ports? These topics as well as the impacts of other changes in global shipping lanes (e.g., Suez Canal and the Arctic shipping lanes) on global trade and ports in the Post-Expansion Panama Canal Era will be discussed in various sessions of the IAME 2014 Conference.
