Free Open Source Software (FOSS) is nowadays influencing the way organizations and individuals create, distribute, acquire and use software and software-based services. FOSS applications are supporting the web based economy and it is growingly being adopted by public institutions. It has become a useful instrument for educators and researchers as well as an important aspect of e-government and information society initiatives.
The transparency of its development process and its resulting open source code has become a viable alternative to closed source software. Publicly funded software development projects are often required to produce FOSS. The widespread adoption of FOSS has introduced new challenges as new legal constraints between integrated FOSS components, requirement of a more structured development process that allows the collaboration of a large number of stakeholders, or the requirement of a stronger quality control of the development process and the FOSS products.
The goal of the 10th International Conference on Open Source Systems, OSS 2014 is to provide an international forum where a diverse community of professionals from academia, industry and public sector, and diverse FOSS initiatives can come together to share research findings and practical experiences. The conference is also meant to provide information to practitioners, identify directions for further research, and to be an ongoing platform for technology transfer, no matter which form of FOSS is being pursued.
Given the widespread diffusion of mobile devices and the relevance of Open Source Operating Systems for such devices - not only Android, but also Sailfish, Ubuntu, and others; the 10th edition of the Conference will provide a specific attention to this area of Open Source, targeting their architectures, design choices, programming languages, etc.
OSS 2014 accepts research papers, industry papers, formal tool demonstrations, lightning talks, new ideas, experience reports, and posters. OSS 2014 also invites proposals for tutorials and workshops, submissions to the doctoral symposium, and submissions of panels.
Accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings, which are published by Springer.
