The Corpus Christi Section will host the 2014 IEEE Region 5 (R5) Annual meeting to be held next year. It will take place April 5-6, 2014 at the Omni Hotel in Corpus Christi. Region 5 has about 25,500 members of all levels and represents 7% of the world-wide IEEE membership. The Region comprises 26 local sections, 186 technical society chapters, and 102 University/College student branches. The Region 5 meeting is structured as a weekend event and includes the Region 5 Student Competitions, Student Professional Activities Conference (SPACs) and the annual Region 5 business meeting. All sections are encouraged to send a voting delegate to the R5 meeting and expenses will be paid by the Region.
The R5 Business meeting, held mainly on Saturday April 5 and if needed on Sunday April 6, will cover a wide range of topics including Officer Reports, Finances, Educational Activities, Membership Development, Affiliate Group Reports (Women In Engineering ? WIE, Graduates Of the Last Decade ? GOLD), Professional Activities Committee for Engineers (PACE) support, and updates on overall IEEE leadership directions.
The Region 5 Student competitions, held on Saturday April 5, include Circuit Design, Ethics, Robotics and Student Paper (undergraduate) events. We expect a robust representation of students from Universities and Colleges in our region. For example, we expect over 30 Student Robotics teams competing; while the competition will be held on Saturday, the teams will start assembling Friday evening. The SPAC and Student Leadership development programs, organized by students, and held on Friday evening are expected to cover a range of topical issues. Some regional support for student travel will be available.
This annual event is to be capped by a Saturday evening Awards banquet that will feature a guest speaker, and recognition of students and team competition winners and outstanding IEEE individuals and programs across the 26 R5 local sections.
Jim Jefferies,
Director, Region 5
