The importance of vegetables cannot be overemphasized, since they should ideally be included in basically every health-related diet. Thus, vegetables play a vital role on food front as they are cheapest-sources of natural foods and can admirably supplement the main cereals. Key challenges in vegetable breeding are a) To assure the continued development of improved vegetable breeding lines and varieties to meet future needs of the vegetable industry and the general public and b) To encourage the transition of basic and applied research findings into usable germplasm and methodologies for use by private sector plant breeders. Genomes of several vegetable crops are being sequenced, a large number of DNA markers are discovered, high throughput genotyping and phenotyping platforms are established and new tools ? linkage mapping, association mapping, family based QTL mapping, functional genomics etc. are upcoming, and integration of genomics in plant breeding is the way forward.
Vienna is located in the heart of Europe on the banks of the Danube River, and considered as one of the most important economic, cultural and touristic large cities of central Europe. Apart from providing top science, the Conference will capture the spirit of the city thanks to the central location of the venue offering a multitude of cultural events.
This three-day event will provide leading academy and industry scientists a platform to communicate recent advances in ““Applied Vegetables Genomics”“! and an opportunity to establish multilateral collaborations.
The International Conference “Applied Vegetables Genomics“! will cover the following research topics:
Model Systems in Vegetables
Epigenetics and Evolution of Vegetable Genome
Natural Variation of Vegetables
Vegetable “Omics” (Genomics, Proteomics & Metabolomics etc)
Genetics & Molecular Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci Genetics & Molecular Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci
Application of Genomics in Vegetable Breeding
Sequencing and Bioinformatics of Vegetable Genome
Molecular Markers, Marker Assisted Selection & Molecular Breeding in Vegetables
Mutant Resources (TILLING, ECOTILLING, DART etc.) for Vegetable Gene Discovery
Vegetable Doubled Haploids
Heterosis and Hybrid breeding of Vegetables
Breeding of Vegetables for Abiotic and Biotic Stress Tolerance
Breeding for Flavor Improvement in Vegetables
Breeding for Enhancing Nutritional, Dietetic and Nutraceutical Value of Vegetables
Amongst the invited speakers are internationally known names such as:
R. Michelmore (USA), B. Moury ( France), B. Vosman (The Netherlands), A. Bendahmane (France), L. Mueller (USA), B. Pico (Spain), D. Zamir (Israel), H. Klee (USA), B. Bohanec (Slovenia), L. Guarino (Italy), R. Cai (China), H. Ezura (Japan), S. Huang (China), D. Choi (Korea), H. Becker (Germany), M. Causse (France), B. Hwang (Korea)
*The list of invited speakers has yet to be confirmed.
Approximately 300-350 participants are expected to attend this exciting scientific forum including almost 40 lectures delivered by worldwide known invited speakers and young, talented speakers selected from submitted abstracts. The program combines plenary lectures, poster sessions, a unique Conference Dinner Party and sightseeing tours of Vienna.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Vienna in February 19-22th, 2014!
Prof. Alisher Touraev (Conference Chair)
Dr. Yuling Bai (Co-Chair, Scientific Programme)
