LACLO 2013 - The doctoral consortium of LACLO 2013
Topics/Call fo Papers
The doctoral consortium of LACLO 2013 provides students who are beginning their doctoral or master studies the opportunity to present their thesis topics in an interdisciplinary workshop in order to interact with peers and experts in the field. The doctoral consortium welcomes doctoral and masters students whose research topics are mature enough to be discussed, but not so mature to not be modified.
The Doctoral Consortium is aimed at students who are pursuing their first or second year of doctoral or master research in the area of Advanced Learning Technologies. The topics of the works must agree those of the conference (see section Topics)
Important dates
Submission deadline: July 1
Notice of acceptance and instructions for submission: August 5
Camera-ready: Jul 01 2013
Distribution of papers to critical peers: September 9
Deadline for submission of questions: September 30
LACLO conference: October 21-25
What is the Doctoral Consortium?
The doctoral consortium is an instance that allows attendees to share and discuss ongoing work of doctoral and master thesis in the field of Advanced Learning Technologies. It offers students the opportunity to present their dissertation topics in an international and diverse environment, and benefit from different perspectives, both from other students and experts in the field. It offers the opportunity to network with other researchers from different institutions in a collaborative environment.
Students wishing to participate must submit a 4-pages extended abstract of their work as well as other information. The expert committee will select the works that will be accepted. Once the abstracts accepted, students must prepare a final version of their work. This final version will be distributed to a small number of other students who also participate in the doctoral consortium (critical peers). Each participant will review one or two articles from other participants and prepare a series of questions, which will be sent to authors prior to the conference.
During the conference there will be two sessions. The first will consist of a workshop where topics will be presented to the other students and experts orally (The talk could be in Spanish whenever the slides are in English). This workshop will focus the questions raised by critical pairs, as well as those that may arise in the moment. The second session corresponds to a poster presentation in which students will have the opportunity to interact with the audience more directly.
The registration fee will be the cost of student (see section Registration), unless the student presents another paper in LACLO, in which case the Doctoral Consortium registration will have no cost. The abstracts will be included in the conference proceedings, which will be distributed in digital format.
How to prepare and submit your proposal
In order to submit, submission a compressed file must be send via the conference submissions system (EasyChair) including the following documents:
? A 4-page extended abstract in English following the format of the conference (see section Authors' Guide). This summary must clearly show the following elements:
? Title of the Thesis
? Background and research motivation
? Literature review on the research topic
? Working hypothesis, thesis, or definition of the problem
? Research Objectives
? Methodological approach and justification for using it
? Results to date
? Expected or current contributions
? References
? Letter of support from the thesis advisor, director of studies or equivalent, stating that the student is actually in the first two years of their research and providing support for their participation in the doctoral consortium, indicating clearly the expected benefit of student involvement in the consortium. This letter may be written in Spanish.
Please verify that the two documents are properly included in the application. In case of receiving a large number of applications, the absence of any of these documents will exclude the application from the selection process.
Review and Selection Process
The selection process will consider different variables. Besides to the quality of work, we will consider selecting a diverse sample of the sub-fields of study and the possibility to form working groups with similar interests. Since one of the objectives of the consortium is to establish contact networks, we will try to select works that come from different institutions. Candidates with a clear idea of the research to be performed, that are well considered by their advisors and that are still on time to make changes will be especially considered.
The confidentiality of the work will be maintained until receipt of the final version in case of accepted papers, and in perpetuity in the case of the rejected. Note that, since an important goal is the interaction between doctoral consortium participants, the author of a paper accepted may be marginalized from participation if he/she does not send the questions in his/her quality of critical peer on schedule. In this situation, of course, the organizers can not guarantee the confidentiality of the work.
