Our aim won’t be only to describe the historical trends in the international economy but also to explain the causes and the consequences of these trends. Participants will come with the basic tools they need to understand the term “Global Economy” and the politics of international economic relations. We will focus on the issues arising from a political economy perspective on globalization and development, with an emphasis on such issues as erosion of national sovereignty, the implications of globalization, and changes in the roles of international institutions, labor organizations, nation-states, and non-governmental organizations. This will provide valuable insights in the field of globalization, including political science, international relations, international business and economy.
The three main topics that we will elaborate during this conference are:
The aim of Political Economy and International Economic Relations ? traditional approaches and criticisms of the traditional divide and the relationship between democracy and markets, global markets and international competition
The link between the socio- economic model and financial crises ? the regulatory reform, how they develop and how they could be prevented
Solutions to emerging economic problems- The Global Village and the new global economic order
September 28 ? The aim of Political Economy and International Economic Relations
During the first day of the conference we will concentrate on interdependence of political and economic processes. This topic pertains to the forms of political-economic relations in historical dimension, concluding with contemporary relations for easier understanding of the phenomenon of world economy. Through this question we will also elaborate relations of economic and political sphere in formal and informal political life, from local communities, associations of citizens, parties, trade unions, companies, to parliaments, international organizations and interstate communities. Our lecturers will particularly pay attention to ideologies and to the use of economic tools to deal with traditional problems of political science.
September 29 ? The link between the socio ? economic model and financial crises
On the second day of the conference we will talk about the general review of contemporary socio ? economic problems, and how the economic activity affects social processes. We will focus on the question of how societies progres, stagnate, or regress due to their local, regional or the global economy. The lecturers will identify the problems of capital movement and transnational corporations, regional economic integrations, international monetary system, international financial institutions and debt crisis, which led to financial crises around the world economic structure. At the same time they will look back on persistent risks to economic health with the emphasis on high unemployment rate, debt and low growth in developed countries. Also, we will analyze the access to financing for developing countries and how the trade and financial integration have underpinned strong growth and job creation, and at the same time helped narrow the gap between rich and poor countries. Workshops during the second day will enable the participants to review and discuss their knowledge about basic theories of international trade, institutionalization of trade and economic categories ? commodity, money, work, capital, stock exchange etc., aiming the prediction of solutions and consequences “established” by the Euro-crisis.
September 30 ? Solutions which The Global Village requires on the way to the new global economic order
On the third day of the conference lectures will elaborate the history of the modern world economy, divided into three periods: The Golden Age (1870-1913), the Interwar Interregnum (1919-1939) and Postwar Globalization (1945-2003). Panel discussion planned for the third day of the conference will be designed to provide an opportunity for participants to hear and discuss personal views with several experts on the specific issue of gradual reemergence of the world economy issue, a trend that is now threatened by politics, anti-globalization forces, and crises in global finance. The discussion will also require both political and economic issues to understand the actual functioning and evolution of the global economy. This discussion may help the participants further clarify and evaluate their critical approach regarding these topics, enabling them to participate in drafting and proposing analysis, synthesis and prediction of solution and consequences which affect transnational diplomacy and measures of power within the new global order.
Through topics which will be covered during the conference ? through lectures, workshops, and panel discussions, we will make a summary and provide some kind of new insight into the challenges political economy and global affairs face today.
