Topics/Call fo Papers

In the post-genomic era with the advent of new technologies, a huge amount of complex molecular data are generated with high throughput. The management of clinical, molecular and biological data is definitely a challenging task due to the complexity and heterogeneity of data. To exploit these heterogeneous data for discovering new knowledge that can be translated into clinical applications, biologists need to handle practical issues such as managing noisy and incomplete data, and processing computationally intensive tasks. Moreover, the integration of heterogeneous molecular data with clinical and biological information is a major prerequisite to discovering the main causes of tumors.
Objective of the Workshop
We believe that data mining and database application will play an increasingly crucial role in furthering biological research. Indeed, Web Services for bioinformatics and biomedicine based on the integration of heterogeneous databases are paramount to managing complex data and sharing biological information among different research institutions. Furthermore, data mining will be the next technical innovation employed by biologists to make insightful observations and groundbreaking discoveries in the molecular biology, pharmaceutical and clinical domains. The mission of this workshop is to disseminate research results and best practices of data mining approaches and database applications to cross-disciplinary researchers and practitioners from both the database/data mining and the life sciences areas. We therefore encourage submission of papers focused on database applications in the biomedical field and/or on data mining techniques addressing the challenging issues of biological data analysis.
Topics of interest:
The topics of interest related to data mining and database applications include, but are not limited to:
Large scale biological and biomedical databases
Data integration and ontologies in biology and medicine
Parallel bioinformatics algorithms
Scientific workflows in bioinformatics and biomedicine
Web Services for bioinformatics and biomedicine
Grid Computing for bioinformatics and biomedicine
The combination of Social and biomedical standards in healthcare systems
Data mining tools for the analysis of biomedical data
Clinical application of data mining for decision making
Knowledge-based clinical data models
Text mining algorithms for biological and healthcare applications
Pattern analysis in computational genetics, genomics and proteomics
Machine learning algorithms for biological and healthcare applications
The workshop will be organized in a way that fosters interaction and exchange of ideas among the participants. Besides paper presentations, time will be allocated to open discussion forums, informal discussions or panels. In addition to regular papers, vision or work-in-progress papers that have the potential to stimulate debate on existing solutions or open challenges are especially encouraged. Proposals for panels on newly-emerging or controversial topics are also especially welcome. Availability of demonstration and/or source code of proposed works are encouraged and we will linked on this web page of the workshop.
