As Moore's Law highlights, the history of computing has been one of ever increasing power. As the end of the 20th Century approached, chip manufacturers began to encounter physical barriers that had the potential to limit further growth. To solve this problem, manufacturers changed the architecture, building more processors into a single chip, calling them Multicore chips. This new architecture heralds not only greater speed but opens up a whole new World of application development. However, this new and exciting scenario comes with a challenge.
Opportunities and Challenges
Sequential versus Parallel ? To take advantage of the potential offered by Multicore chips it will be necessary for application developers to move on from the existing sequential approach to software logic and embrace Parallel programming. Parallel programming is not a new concept, but it is more difficult to write. It is estimated than less than 10% of all the software programmers Worldwide are currently able to deal with parallel programming.
As the shift to Parallel processing proceeds, there will be huge opportunities. Dealing with the migration of legacy code or creating innovative applications that can take advantage of potentially thousands of cores in a chip. Plus of course all the range of services, solutions and systems integration needs. This is an ideal area for the fertile mind of the technologists, software communities and researchers within New Zealand, Australia and our region. It is mainstream but it is a niche new technology.
The Role of Multicore World
Why Multicore World ? The main goal of this conference is to provide CIOs, CTOs and software community leaders with the knowledge and connections they need, to make valid business and technology decisions in terms of their multicore software and hardware strategies for the coming years. Multicore World 2013 continues the successful path initiated at the miniconferences “Multicore and Parallel Computing” part of LCA2010 (Wellington) and LCA2011 (Brisbane, Australia), and the inaugural Multicore World 2012 (Wellington).
The Organiser - Open Parallel Ltd., a New Zealand based company specialised in Software for Multicore and Parallel Computing has been working in multicore for years. Open Parallel organises the second edition of Multicore World ? a global conference about Multicore Technologies (software and hardware).
