We are pleased to cordially invite you to submit abstracts to the 7th International Association for China Planning (IACP) Conference, to be held from June 29 to July 1, 2013, in Shanghai, China.
Conference Theme
Urban resiliency in the face of uncertainty is a priority for planning and governance in communities worldwide. In China, which has suffered many of the world’s most devastating floods, earthquakes, and typhoons, preparing for the threat of disaster has long been an important planning objective. Recent calamities, such as the 2008 Winter Storms, the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, and the 2012 Beijing Floods have only made planning for resiliency more urgent.
As planners work to prepare for such events, interdisciplinary collaboration becomes increasingly important. Planners need the tools and insights offered by other fields, including both the natural and social sciences. At the same time, these interdisciplinary relationships also help to shape the identity of urban-rural planning in its new role as one of China’s primary academic disciplines.
The 7th IACP Conference, to be held from June 29 to July 1, 2013, will bring together planners, designers, scholars, scientists, engineers, and government officials from China and all over the world to exchange ideas on the theme, Building Resilient Cities in China: The Nexus between Planning and Science.
Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Historical and theoretical foundations
Land use
Housing and community development
Infrastructure (transportation, water, energy, etc.)
Urban design
Analytical methods
Technological developments and applications
Climate change and ecological planning
Emergency management and disaster relief
Risk mitigation and anticipatory practice
Domestic and international best practices and case studies
Abstract Submission
Please submit your paper abstract of 300-400 words, in English*, including the title, author(s), affiliation, contact address, telephone and email address, at http://www.chinaplanning.org/conf/index.php/iacp_7... by January 5, 2013. If you work in mainland China, please also provide your Chinese name, affiliation, contact address, abstract title and abstract in both English and Chinese. The abstract should outline the research questions, methodology, and data sources (if applicable), as well as its contribution to existing knowledge. All abstracts will be peer reviewed by the Technical Committee.

The International Association for China Planning (IACP) is an independent non-profit organization of scholars, students, and practitioners interested in planning issues in China. Founded in 2005 and located in Washington DC, U.S.A., its mission is three-fold: (1) to serve as a bridge between urban planning researchers and practitioners in China and their counterparts in other countries, (2) to provide a forum for scholarly and professional dialogues, and (3) to form a lively and supportive community for its members. The Local Host
Established in 1896 as Nan Yang College, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of the first national institutions of higher learning in China. SJTU is located on five campuses in Shanghai, with 31 schools and more than 35,000 students. The School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering was founded in 2003. The school has a strong grounding in scientific and technical education, with extensive, state-funded research programs. Jianmin Yang is the current Dean of the School. The conference will be hosted at SJTU’s Xuhui campus in the historic center of Shanghai.
*Conference language: The working language for the IACP Conference is English.
**IEEE: Paper submission is only required for those participants wishing to publish a conference paper in the IEEE proceeding. Papers will be peer reviewed and an additional fee is required for publication. Please consult the conference website for further details.
