Special Issue on Space-Time Research in GIScience
International Journal of Geographical Information Science (IJGIS)
Target Deadline for Submission: May 15, 2013
Expected Dates for Publication: Early 2014
Special Issue Editors: Mei-Po Kwan and Tijs Neutens
The fast growing volume, diversity, and intensity of spatio-temporal data pose fundamental GIScience challenges, spanning from conceptualization, representation, computation, and visualization. The unprecedented wealth of fine-grained data, for example, on mobile objects in particular has propelled movement analysis and time-geographic methodologies to the forefront of GIScience research. While many disciplines face the so-called Big Data Challenge, GIScience rises to the frontier for the ubiquitous location-aware data cutting across environmental, economic, social, medical, and behavioral dimensions in the geospatial revolution. These challenges provide new opportunities for research that was not possible or inconceivable before, and at the same time call for new thinking and approaches to understand the complexity and dynamics manifesting across spatial and temporal scales. A space-time research panel in the GIScience 2012 International Conference highlighted the state of space-time research in GIScience as well as challenges and opportunities in the field, cutting across reasoning, databases, analysis, modeling, and visualization. Leading researchers on the panel advocated for a comprehensive review of space-time research in GIScience and related fields, new integrated concepts that go beyond the space-time cube to transform space-time research, novel approaches to elicit patterns and relationships in space and time, and many other research directions.
We invite submissions of original GIScience research to address these new challenges. The special issue will be open to all ideas and topics, not limited to the panel discussions. In addition to original research papers, we welcome reviews with new perspectives to the development of space-time research in GIScience, discussions on key milestones and hurdles, and visions for the future of the research. We expect that the special issue will become a landmark publication for space-time research in GIScience.
Manuscripts should be around 5000-6000 words. All submissions will go through the standard IJGIS peer review process. Please see detailed instructions for authors at:
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/tgisauth.a...
All submissions should be made online at the International Journal of Geographical Information Science Manuscript Central site:

Please select “Special Issue” when reaching the “Article Type” step in the submission process, and specify “Space-Time Research in GIScience Special Issue” in your cover letter. New users should first create an account. Once logged on to the site, submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available on this website.
