Session and Special Issue on Integrated Natural Disaster Reduction and Sustainable Development in China

Abstract:
Large-scale disasters (LSDs), from Wenchuan Earthquake in China to
Earthquake in Northeastern Japan Sea, show that the impact of LSDs can
be extended to more broad scopes and geographical regions in addition
to large direct economic losses. Furthermore, the disastrous
influence can be global for some extreme cases. This session is thus
suggested to discuss the recent progress in disaster and risk research
in China, such as comparative cases studies, integrated disaster and
risk information platform, and complication of disaster risk atlas.
Integrated approach from geographical perspective should be
highlighted to better understand the complexity of disasters and its
impact on the human beings. With the promotion of Chinese geographers,
integrated research has drawn great attention from the international
society. Integrated Risk Governance (IRG) Project International Human
Dimension Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP) was
officially launched in China in 2010, which is a 10-year international
effort on improving the governance of new risks that exceed current
human coping capacities.
This session aims to create a platform for researchers and
policy-makers, who are interested in integrated approach on disaster
and risk, to discuss and exchange new ideas and practice in managing
extreme disaster events. Participants can turn their presentation into
a paper to be published in a Special Issue of International Journal of
Disaster Risk Science
