Topics/Call fo Papers

The traditional world of real-time embedded systems undergoes a continuous evolution towards more and more complex hardware and software architectures, where computing is distributed across a network of interconnected and possibly heterogeneous processing units; soft real-time co-exists with hard real-time, and highlevel software infrastructures and middleware play an increasingly important role in the overall picture. At the same time, the world of high-end parallel and distributed computing systems and applications, in its continuously evolving declinations in the form of High-Performance Computing, GRID Computing, Service- Oriented and recently Cloud Computing, is generally paying more and more attention to issues related to Quality of Service, predictability of the timing behavior, interactivity, and real-time performance.

Providing real-time guarantees in the distributed computing arena raises a number of challenging scientific and engineering problems that span across a variety of research areas, such as: real-time computing, parallel and distributed systems, software engineering and architectures, fault-tolerance and virtualization. In the recent years, the efforts to integrate non-functional properties, mainly real-time behavior, in the new computing paradigms have shown out the actual complexity of the problem ahead of us, realizing also the evident need for providing reliability, security, and real-time guarantees.

Both from the real-time community and from the distributed and parallel systems one, researchers are, at some point, walking the same path by sharing the same goal of effectively and efficiently providing timedeterministic execution frameworks to the next-generation high-performance, parallel and distributed applications. Solutions from both worlds present interesting approaches that can benefit from meeting at a common forum with the goal of drawing a complete picture of the problem, of the solutions from both worlds, and of the possibility of identifying novel research areas as resulting from this crossbreading.

This workshop aims at providing a forum for presentation and discussion of the contributions and ideas of researchers working on real-time systems and distributed systems for the next-generation applications. The goal is to bring together contributions on both practical and theoretical aspects applied to the integration of real-time support in these new computation paradigms emphasizing aspects of real-time support for flexibility and system dynamics.

With these goals in mind, the proposed workshop will cover practical and theoretical aspects of computation models, mechanisms, and technologies for distributed real-time systems.

Scope and topics

Relevant research areas for the proposed workshop include, but are not limited to, the challenging issues in the integration of real-time support in emerging applications and in the increasingly important distributed computing paradigms such as CLOUD and GRID:

scheduling and resource management for Quality of Service support and Real-Time operation in distributed systems;
real-time middleware
optimization of the network operation and performance;
service-oriented architectures and composition mechanisms;
real-time reconfiguration in distributed computing;
scalable computing models and algorithms and massively parallel real-time distributed computing;
operating system support and resource management for dynamic distributed real-time systems and cloud computing applications;
real-time assurance in virtualized distributed applications;
self-healing and survivability of distributed real-time systems
Submissions

Submitted papers should not be published or under submission elsewhere. Each paper is limited to 6 pages in IEEE Computer Society Proceedings Manuscripts style (two columns, single-spaced, 10 fonts).

You can confirm the IEEE Computer Society Proceedings Author Guidelines at the following site for Word and Latex templates.

Once accepted, the paper will be included into the workshop proceedings.
