QU3ST 2012 - QU3ST Workshop ? 2.5D Sensing Technologies in Motion: The Quest for 3D
Topics/Call fo Papers
There already exist many workshops and seminars on SfM/SfX, non-classical imaging or active sensors. This one is, to our point of view, unique in so far as it takes into account the very recent advances in sensor technologies and intends to bring together different communities: different fields or sub-fields of research (machine vision, computer vision, robotics, multiple view, active sensing), different level of interest and involvement (manufacturers, researchers, users), different scientific heritage and background. We all share common points of interest: how to provide a 3D model of the environment? how to take benefit from it for a given application? Our intention is to find out a common language and generic methodology, sensor-independent, to best describe, analyse and handle these points of interest. The workshop will help in stimulating the discussion to reveal new challenges and prospects in SfM/SfX.
As researchers in SfM/SfX and active sensing (the committee is composed of researchers from both side and different fields of applications), we feel the need in sharing experiences and results, defining unified framework and theory, filling the gap between passive and active vision, catching and incorporating advances in technology into scientific issues and methodologies. We did not find any event so far in which these questions are raised and discussed. We do think that organizing such a workshop could be a first step towards. Indeed, there is a clear distinction between this proposal and previous workshops. This one is focused towards adapting SfM to active sensing while a lot of what we have seen before was merely about showcasing the “new” active sensors. We wanted this proposal rather explicit in trying to define a generic framework that could be used for passive and active sensors.
QU3ST is held in conjunction with ECCV 2012 (12th European Conference on Computer Vision, Firenze, Italy, October 2012). It will take place on Saturday October 13, 2012.
