Can China Sustain its Transformation? Management Challenges in a Resource-Scarce and Shock-Prone Global Economy

The business sector and policy makers in emerging economies, like that of China, are in today's global economy still reeling from the shocks and after-shocks of the global financial crisis. The challenges are compounded by rising natural disasters and the threat of climate change. For China, the challenges are to continue its structural change that has uplifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty over the past thirty years. How can this structural change be continued, and how should it be managed? How can the business sector and the growing entrepreneurial class in the country make a positive contribution? It is clear that at least three broad areas need be at the spearhead of policy: the agricultural sector, where issues of food security and water stands central in sustainable development; the industrial sector, where urbanization and resource use, the needs for low carbon growth, stands central; and the country's international collaboration to access natural resources, where its relationship with Africa is assuming increasing importance.
This international conference, organized jointly by Nanjing University Business School and the Maastricht School of Management (MsM), and coinciding with the 60th Anniversary celebrations of MsM, aims to bring together scholars in business, development, management, economics and engineering to deliberate on these issues over a period of one and a half days in the dynamic and historical city of Nanjing.

II. Session 2: Industry, Urbanization and Migration in China
III. Session 3: China's Thirst for Resources and China-Africa Economic Relations
