TNGC 2012 - Workshop on "Towards Next Generation Clouds"
Topics/Call fo Papers
Workshop on
"Towards Next Generation Clouds"
in conjunction with eChallenges e-2012,
17-19 October 2012, Lisbon, Portugal,
http://www.echallenges.org
Cloud computing has experienced strong growth in the recent past. The
market is currently mainly dominated by pioneering cloud providers (e.g.
Amazon, Microsoft and Google). Since this computing paradigm originated in
the commercial field, one of the collateral issues is vendor lock-in. With
multiple smaller organisations (not having the market power of Amazon,
Microsoft or Google) offering cloud-based services, a wider market has
been created in which customers can choose the cloud provider that is best
suited for their use-case. However, even here the customer is bound to the
offered capabilities and idiosyncrasies of the chosen provider and
therefore experience lock-in effects.
Lock-in is a result of providing inflexible solutions in an ad-hoc fashion
and the lack of accepted standards and technologies. In many cases
providers rather put their solutions on top of existing frameworks in
order to be quick to market instead of providing a cloud solution which
possesses the necessary flexibility in terms of supported functionalities.
This workshop will bring together experts from various domains (grid, web
services, cloud, middleware, legal, modelling and business) to present
their respective views on visions and activities, to analyse where we are
and how we have to proceed in order to realize next generation Clouds
overcoming the abovementioned issues.
Generally, the existing Cloud solutions address already a variety of
target groups, but the inflexibility of provided capabilities still
hinders Clouds to exploit the full potential of this concept. Changes are
needed on different levels, not only on the technological level but
potentially also in overall paradigm of producing and providing Cloud
software/solutions.
The workshop aims at identifying road blocks that keep Clouds on
technological but also on business level from reaching their full
potential, proposing and evaluating solutions to particular problems,
assessing experiences, and describing novel models, approaches and
paradigms.
It will bring together experts from various domains to present and discuss
their views on next generation Clouds. Contributions will focus on the
following:
. Overcoming the inflexibility of provided capabilities
. Addressing the vendor lock-in problem
. Advances in cloud middleware
. Changing the way how Cloud solutions are developed
. New paradigms in using Clouds
. Social and corporate factors influencing the adoption of Clouds
. Experiences with Cloud solution developments
