The http://acds.co.za/index.php?page=conf2012African Centre for Disaster Studies at North-West University would like to welcome disaster reduction academics, researchers, practitioners and post-gradute students to the first biennial disaster risk reduction conference of the Southern Africa Society for Disaster Reduction
.
The conference will take place from 10-12 October 2012 in the beautiful student town of Potchefstroom , North-West Province in South Africa .
Potchefstroom, and in particular the North-West University's Sports Village,was the base camp of the FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010 champions, Spain! (Take a virtual tour of the NWU here... )
Although the conference has a regional flavour, participants from all
regions of the globe are welcome to present papers and/or attend the
conference . The conference will be the ideal opportunity for international networking and the sharing of ideas, best practices and leading research in the field of disaster reduction.
Aim of the Conference The aim of the conference is threefold.

* The ACDS will be turning 10 years old in 2012 and this 1st International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction will be held to celebrate its first decade.
* Secondly, the aim of the conference is to provide a platform for the
presentation, discussion and debate of different academic and professional approaches and research on disaster risk reduction issues.

* Thirdly, the ACDS plans to establish and launch a disaster risk reduction society for the Southern Africa (SADC region) during the
conference. The aim of the society is to bring together practitioners/NGOs
in the various fields of DRR and the academic/research domain, and to
provide a platform to share knowledge and good practices, engage in
mentorships and internships, influence policy and advocacy in the SADC
region.
Cost of the Conference
Early Bird Registration: ZAR3500.00 (US$450.00) - all inclusive package.
Late registrations (after 31 May 2012): ZAR3950.00 (US$510.00) - all
inclusive package.
Day 1 only: ZAR1500.00 (US$185.00) - includes cocktail function (add
ZAR100.00/US$15.00 for accompanying partner).
Day 2 only: ZAR1500.00 (US$185.00) - includes gala dinner (add
ZAR250.00/US$30.00 for accompanying partner).
Day 3 only: ZAR1500.00 (US$185.00).
Additional guests - Cocktail function on day 1: ZAR100.00/US$15.00.
Additional guests - Gala dinner on day 2: ZAR250.00/US$30.00.
Students: ZAR800.00 ($100) for the conference all inclusive (proof of
university registration must be provided)
