The conference theme “Global problems, shared solutions” underlines the inescapable fact that the cutting edge technology of the 21st century has spawned a dynamic global village. The concept was first popularized by Marshall McLuhan. He artfully described how the globe had contracted into a village by “electric technology” and the instantaneous movement of information “from every quarter to every point at the same time.”
If that was McLuhan’s perception in the 1960′s, how profoundly accurate is it today.
So it is that in second decade of the present century, issues in construction law, as never before, have come to transcend national boundaries. As the conference theme so clearly recognises, the issues clamour for trans-national solutions and the mutual sharing of hard won experience.
Thanks must be extended to our organisers for conceiving of the program and bringing us together for what promises to be an outstanding international conference of the Society of Construction Law.
The very best thing about our field of endeavour is the people who participate in it. The conference will present a wonderful opportunity to meet professionals in construction law drawn from the many parts of the ‘village’. Talk, challenge, learn and above all enjoy the good company in our great home-town of Melbourne. The city and its vineyard environs have a great deal to offer. We are looking forward to touring it with you and eating our way in great style through the few days allowed to us next May.
