Here begins the famous "Amber Route" well-known from history of ancient Rome. Nowadays it means the tourist route through museums of the amber and shops with them. The first written mention of Gdańsk comes from 997 when the first Polish Christian ruler Mieszko I decided to build the bastion and the port at the River Motlawa. Because of the dynamic development of trade, fishery and craft guilds the city has taken and strengthened its leading position among all Pomerania cities and towns. In the seventeenth century, Gdańsk experienced its "golden age". In that time the city enjoyed the specific status of a municipal republic. It was also a melting pot of cultures and ethnical groups. Merchants, sailors, men of science and art arrived here from all parts of Europe. Gdańsk is known as a hometown of Fahrenheit and famous astronomer Hevelius.

Currently, the city has over 500 000 inhabitants and together with Gdynia and Sopot constitutes the most dynamically developing agglomeration in this part of Europe. It is an important center of shipbuilding, engineering, electronics and chemical industries. Besides it Three-City agglomeration is a very significant business center with many banks and financial institution. Because of seven universities, sixteen research institutes and many theaters, museums and art galleries located in the city, Gdańsk is an attractive place not only for businessman and industrialists but also for students and tourists. Highly developed transport infrastructure, including international airport, rail network and seaport with ferry connections, allows the city to maintain and facilitate economic relations with many European countries. Like in the past, also nowadays Gdańsk deserves to be called "the Pearl of the North.".

The changing in Europe began in August 1980 in Gdańsk. Now, we invite all of you to take part in European Navigational Conference in the city were all was started.
