●Speakers
Prof. Yongping Li
Beijing Normal University, China
Yongping Li is a Professor at Beijing Normal University, China. Her research interests involve in energy and environmental systems analysis, environmental pollution control, water resources management, and decision making under uncertainty. Since 2005, Li has led or involved in over 50 energy- and environment-related research projects supported by industrial, governmental and international organizations. She has produced over 350 peer-refereed international journal papers (with an SCI-based H-index of 40 in Science Citation Index under Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science), and supervised over 70 Master/PhD students. She has been continuously selected as a highly cited scholar in the field of “environmental science” (by Elsevier) since 2013.
Prof. Edward McBean
University of Guelph, Canada
Dr. Ed McBean received his BASc from University of British Columbia (UBC) in 1968, and his PhD (Magna Cum Laude) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1973. After a post-doc at Cornell University, he was a professor at the University of Waterloo and from 1995 to 2003, and Ed then worked in industry, as Vice President of CRA (3rd largest engineering firm in Canada) and President of CRA Engineering, Inc. In 2003, McBean was awarded a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Water Security, which he held at the University of Guelph until 2017. Subsequently, he has been University of Guelph Research Leadership Chair Professor, Water Security. Ed is an academician in Canada, being a Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering and an academician in the US, being Diplomate, American Academy of Water resources Engineering and American Society of Civil Engineers.
Prof. Liping Fang
Ryerson University, Canada
Liping Fang is a helpful guy to have around when there is a complicated decision to make. In both of his professional roles – as a researcher and an administrator – he specializes in determining how to allocate resources when there are competing interests and limited options. As an engineering researcher, Fang develops models that enable as many participants as possible to benefit from a decision-making process. For example, he worked on a case study involving a prairie river basin, helping a diverse group of stakeholders decide how to allocate scarce water resources while navigating legal, regulatory and customary constraints. “Our models search for solutions in which everybody wins,” he says. His expertise with resource allocation has also been useful in his role as associate dean of undergraduate programs and student affairs at the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science. He is regularly faced with tough decisions, such as how to assess new programs or resolve academic appeals. “I always try to think from the perspective of the different stakeholders to see how we can make better decisions.”
