The nature of Web mail traffic has significantly evolved in the last two decades, and consequently the behavior of Web mail users has also changed. For instance, recent studies showed that today 90% of Web mail traffic is machine-generated. This partly explains why email traffic continues to grow even if a significant amount of personal communications has moved towards social media and mobile. It also explains different behavioral patterns in Web Mail, and enables the application of automated data extraction learning methods at a very large scale, in order to offer users new mail features and applications including customized search results, tailored advertising, and spam and malware detection. While abundant research has been conducted around the many data science facets of the Web, Web Mail has received much less attention. Nevertheless, Web Mail has started to surface novel features in the last few years, and is becoming an emerging topic of Web research. Examples of such are mail mining, clustering and classification, security and privacy, anti-spam, and mail search. This workshop will for the first time gather research in the emerging research area of Web Mail, aiming to encourage its growth and adoption.
