The Center for European & Mediterranean Affairs organizes A Stream on “Graphic Design in Mediterranean Countries”, 26-29 March 2018, Athens, Greece as part of the 11th Annual International Conference on Mediterranean Studies sponsored by the Athens Journal of Mediterranean Studies.
The aim of the stream is to acknowledge and introduce the diverse approaches involved in the field of Graphic Design in the Mediterranean Countries, taking into account all the extent of the topics focusing on cultural production methods of social /visual communication. We encourage the participation of Artists, Graphic Designers, Academic Researchers and Lecturers, inviting them to share their experiences, to debate, propose and exchange ideas, and define new policies for Graphic Design.
Like every culture has its own communication rules, Graphic design, being a universal language, has the ability to artistically retransform itself and give birth to a combination of styles within the sphere of visual expression. The universal and recognized goal of design is to transfer a message by the use of graphic (visual) elements, sharing a conception by making it perceptible. This way of communicating ideas also involves and conveys social, cultural, aesthetical, technological and economical values. Thus, it becomes clear that Graphic Designers are actually artists in the service of a form of art that is strongly communicational and purpose oriented.
Keeping in mind the above, this stream initiates a regional approach to graphic design, focusing on the Mediterranean Countries’ artistic productions. Case studies can discuss a multitude of examples, referring to topics like visual fundamentals, visual comparisons, socio-cultural approaches to creativity, use of typography, branding, packaging, poster design, advertising, printmaking, as well as to various other methods and styles used to represent a culture, attributing to it a distinct visual identity.
