The general headings are intended as no more than signposts to specialists with an interest in traditional areas of research. However, it is hoped that they will also act as an encouragement to those newer in the field, and to all those interested in being innovative and experimental in their approach, and in keeping with IAFOR’s vision, we particularly encourage interdisciplinary explorations of the streams below
IICJ 2016 Streams
Historical Studies
Papers are solicited on either micro- or macro-level questions of Japanese history. These could range from contemporary archaeological discoveries and their significance to more recent interpretations and evaluations of events, people and periods. Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approaches might be used to throw new light on old questions.
Stream 1: Japanese History
Political and Economic Development
General discussions of the Japanese economy since 1868 are fundamental background to the understanding of Japan’s pre-war and post-war growth. The contemporary policies of Abenomics and Abe’s stance on Constitutional and Defense Issues have become a major part of contemporary Japan’s approach to global problems. Research papers covering these fields can also look at them as they appear or in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective. The History and Development of Japanese Business and Management provide a unique set of insights into how change and continuity blend in the way in which Japanese commercial and economic life has evolved.

Social Issues in Japanese Society
Contemporary Japan as part of a globalized world is facing problems common to all developed economics. This general heading is intended to cover some of these emerging problems and the various solutions that have been proposed. Key areas of investigation cover a Declining and Aging Population with its consequent Health and resultant societal problems, as well as technological responses. Separate but not unconnected questions include Rural Depopulation and Immigration Policy. Energy and Nuclear Energy Questions while political issues also have important social consequences for the nation’s daily life.
Stream 5: Japanese Society
Japanese Culture Past and Present
These streams look at Japan’s long and rich cultural heritage, and invites presentations on all historical aspects of Japanese Literature, Music, Drama and the Arts. Alongside these, contemporary studies are needed to focus on the enormous cultural changes taking place. The huge expansion of social networking, and the phenomenal global growth of Manga and Anime as well as in Japan point to the ongoing creativity within the culture. Modern developments in Media and Communications as well as the distinctive character of the Japanese Cinema all fall under this heading.
