The Politics & International Affairs Unit of ATINER organizes a Stream on “Language Ideologies in the Global Age” as part of the 16th Annual International Conference on International Studies, 18-21 June 2018, Athens, Greece sponsored by the Athens Journal of Social Sciences.
This stream proposes a re-assessment of language ideologies in a globalizing world. Today, the frequent mobility of people – and consequently that of language – has greatly increased contact between human groups with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In such a context, as is well known, English has come to be perceived as an international lingua franca by default, and in fact, it is typically highlighted as the most prominent phenomenon brought about by globalization. A number of studies have been conducted on this issue, offering many insights into our understanding of this phenomenon. However, our interests lie in the concomitant development of globalization and localization of language and how this is reflected in representations and ideologies.
To broaden our understanding of language ideologies in a globalizing world, this stream invites participants from various contexts to compare and contrast different examples of how language ideologies are embedded in linguistic reality today. This stream welcomes presentations on issues on language ideologies from various perspectives and contexts, particularly those in which languages of lesser power are in contact with language(s) other than English within a society.

The Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) was established in 1995 as an independent world association of Academics and Researchers. Its mission is to act as a forum where Academics and Researchers from all over the world can meet in Athens, in order to exchange ideas on their research, and to discuss future developments in their disciplines.
The organizing and hosting of International Conferences and Symposiums, the carrying out of Research, and the production of Publications are the basic activities of ATINER. Since 1995, ATINER has organized more than 400 International Conferences and other events, and has published close to 200 books. In 2012, the Association launched a series of conference paper publications (click here), and at the beginning of 2014, it introduced its own series of Journals (click here).
