The Journal of Gender Studies
Special Issue 2015: Call for Papers
"Diversity in Gender and Visual Representation"
Guest Editors: Russell Luyt, Christina Welch and Rosemary Lobban
(JGS Editor: Blu Tirohl)
We invite the submission of either research or theory papers for a Journal of Gender Studies special issue titled ‘Diversity in Gender and Visual Representation’. This will build upon the successes of a recent interdisciplinary conference dedicated to this topic, hosted by the Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Winchester (United Kingdom).
The special issue will showcase the breadth of contemporary research and theory concerning the study of gender and visual representation; highlighting divergent methodological and theoretical insights. The diversity of this interdisciplinary field will also be evident in the range of different socio-cultural locations, historical periods, and phenomena that interest researchers working in this area. Authors selected for this special issue will be those who challenge normative societal assumptions, promote broader critical debate and engage audiences beyond their peers.
Work related to gender and visual representation represents a still growing field situated within a dynamic and changing technological milieu. Yet much of the current work addresses the visual only implicitly and/or in isolation from broader debates. Its explicit consideration through this special issue will move the field to a more fully articulated account, mindful of its variable consideration across disciplines. This will provide a handy conceptual toolkit for those seeking to engage in interdisciplinary research. We argue for less ‘reinventing the wheel’ and more integrated, and hence potentially sophisticated thinking in the field of gender and visual representation.
The guest editors invite articles of 5000-7000 words. Please see the Journal of Gender Studies’ guidance for authors at http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/cjgs20/current.
