Topics/Call fo Papers

The second half of the twentieth century was marked in Latin America, and especially in South American countries, by the emergence of military dictatorships and authoritarian governments, which had the support of significant sectors of civil society. These dictatorships persecuted, impeached, censored, imprisoned, exiled, and killed dissenting voices. But they also faced different resistance movements that, in their multiple facets, challenged them. In this context, intellectuals – understood here in their polysemic character – played an important role, especially from the perspective, which gained strength in the 1960s and 1970s, which argued that intellectuals could and should be one of the main agents of the transformation of societies. Thus, the intellectual universe was also crossed by the commitment to political engagement. The public sphere became the stage not only for his political militancy against dictatorships and imperialism, but also for intense reflections and intellectual debates that wished to comprehend the history of Latin American societies and the building of alternative political projects. This dossier aims to join papers from different areas of Human Sciences that look for the relationships between intellectuals and political militancy; trajectories of intellectuals, circulation of ideas and their networks of sociability; the work of intellectuals in exile; intellectuals, political projects and revolutionary parties and/or organizations in the context of Latin American dictatorships.
