Device-to-Device (D2D) communication has recently gained momentum in academia and industries as a mean to extend coverage and overcome the limitations of conventional cellular systems. Devices being close to each other can activate direct links by either using cellular communication resources (i.e., inband D2D) or using alternative radio technologies such as Wi-Fi (i.e., outband D2D). The D2D communication paradigm holds, among others, the promise of very high bit rates, low delays, and low power consumption. There are a number of applications where D2D communication can provide significant improvements making it a key feature of 5G wireless systems. For example, it can be useful to provide mobile data offloading for proximity based applications, to extend the network coverage, or supporting content sharing among users and group oriented services. However, there are many issues still waiting for a solution before a widespread use in next generation networks is granted. Objective of this workshop is to bring together academic and industrial researchers and discuss recent results and future research issues related to D2D communication in 5G networks.
Topics of interest are (but not limited to):
